Chechen Adat Traditions
Adat — The Foundation of Chechen Culture
Adat refers to a code of unwritten laws and behavioral rules that have been shaped over centuries and passed down from generation to generation. They govern all aspects of Chechen society: from family relations to hospitality.
Hospitality
Hospitality (khoshalla) is one of the most important Chechen traditions. A guest in the house is considered a messenger of God. The host must provide the guest with the best seat, the best food, and protection.
Respect for Elders
Reverence for elders is a fundamental principle of Chechen society. Younger people always stand when an elder enters, give up their seat, and do not interrupt in conversation.
